Kick The KD: The Course Outline!

Well, here we are…2 days away from the very first Kick The KD class! It feels like only yesterday this idea was just a twinkle in my eye. They grow up so fast. Sigh…but, I digress…Take some time and read through our 10-week course outline. I’ve also lined up some very exciting guests to pop by every so often throughout the weeks to help provide further insight and cooking inspiration!

__________________________________________________________________

Week 1: Breaking The Ice

Pastas, sauces, and lasagna…because we’ve got to start somewhere, right? Starting with basic pasta, and then going to the next level. Kinda like Super Mario…

Week 2: Get Yer Grains

5-minute rice is so…like…5 minutes ago? Let’s cook up some dishes with some grains you might not of used before. We’re gonna need a lot of veggies chopped up for this class, so it’s a good thing Keith from The Knife Shop in Inglewood is popping by for a knife skills tutorial!

Week 3: Good Morning Sunshine!

Quit skipping breakfast! Quick morning snacks so you can stay awake in that 9AM chemistry class. Featuring a short presentation by Wendy from Yelp!

Week 4: Beer, Wine, Why Not?

You drink it on the weekends, so we might as well cook with it too. Featuring guest appearances by Brad & Mike of Steam Whistle Pilsner, and Charcut‘s beer sommelier, Kirk!

Week 5: Cooking For The Fam

Our ode to the parents. It’s time to say: ‘Thank you Mom & Dad for cooking for me for 20+ years!’. Preparing a relatively quick and easy family dinner with a guest appearance from food writer and cookbook author Julie Van Rossendaal!

Week 6: Rocking The Veg

What the hell are you supposed to feed your vegetarian/vegan friends for supper? We’re going to put the ‘delicious’ into tofu, and other veggie diet friendly ingredients with a guest appearance by Home Tasting Room‘s executive chef Geoff Rogers.

Week 7: Get Me To The Greek

…or just overseas in general. Mediterranean, Indian, and Asian fare that will be easier than your first year drama class.

Week 8: This Little Piggy…Came From The Local Market

Finding a story behind cooking with local ingredients. Do I smell a field trip to the farmers’ market? Yes, I do! We’ll be heading over to the Calgary Farmers’ Market with John Jackson and Connie Desousa from Charcut to get inspired about sourcing, and utilizing ingredients from local suppliers!

Tim Hoven of Hoven Farms will also be coming in to our weekly cooking class to talk ‘local’ from a producer’s stand point! What a week!

Week 9: You Had Me At ‘Hell, that looks good!’

Cooking an impressive romantic (or just plain fancy) 4 course dinner on a budget with a guest appearance from local cookbook author and food writer Pierre Lamielle.

Week 10: Just From Scratch

We’ll draw some random ingredients out of Kick The KD’s top secret tickle trunk (that we stole from Dr. Dress-up) and see what we can come up with!

__________________________________________________________________

After each Kick The KD class, participants will be sent home with recipe ‘assignments’ to complete before the following class. As previously mentioned, in lieu of a ‘textbook’, everyone will be given a Canadian food blogger to stay current with throughout the 10 weeks. We’ll be keeping you updated on all of the progress, with commentary from the students on a weekly basis. Check back here Thursday night to find out more about each of the Kick The KD-ers and to see which Canadian food bloggers that they have been paired up with!
