About Dan
Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Dan Clapson moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2006 with nothing but a parrot on his shoulder (and a full U-Haul). He now happily resides in the city’s beltline area [still] with a parrot on his shoulder. He is constantly creating new recipes, and, in turn, testing them out on his friends. Finding inspiration has always been easy, albeit fairly random, and when an idea pops into his head Dan immediately scribbles it somewhere, anywhere actually: old receipts or newspapers, amoung other writable surfaces. When he’s not experimenting with recipes, Dan can be found dining out with friends, catching some live music, walking around town, or volunteering as a programmer for Calgary’s Fairy Tales Film Festival.
In November of 2010, Dan established Kick The KD, a cooking initiative aimed at university students. The program kicked off in February, 2011 where fifteen University of Calgary students were chosen to participate over a ten week period to improve their cooking and eating habits. The main goal of the program was to encourage a love of cooking, which, must to Dan’s relief, was accomplished. The first successful run of this program was sponsored by Calgary Co-op, Steam Whistle Pilsner, and Yelp.ca. Due to trademark issues, the cooking initiative had to under-go a face lift/name change, and is now titled Start From Scratch. The program resumed this fall and has been expanded to include the students of Mount Royal University, as well!
Dan is a regular contributor to Food Network Canada, where he writes about his culinary adventures in Calgary and beyond. In addition, he also writes for Avenue Magazine and a weekly restaurant review column for Metro Calgary. His recipes have been featured in both online and print media such as Bitchin’ Kitchen, the Calgary Herald and Canadian Living (fall 2011). He is currently working on a cookbook inspired by the Start From Scratch course, which will tentatively debut in early 2012. (that may be wishful thinking…)
