Shubham Gill broke five records after his 129 run performance against MI during IPL Qualifier 2, 2023.
Gill’s thrashing of MI in this crucial game ensured his club a place in the IPL Final for the second consecutive year. Gujarat will compete now against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, 28th May.
Mumbai delayed the game due to rain. The Titans openers Gill, and Wriddhiman, Saha, got their team started well. After the end of the powerplay, they took GT to 50/0. Saha was caught behind in the seventh over but Gill continued to move forward.
Gill, who hit boundaries occasionally in the overs of the innings, waited in the middle to settle in before terrorizing MI in the second half.
After scoring 50 points in 32 balls, the right-hander entered beast mode. The Narendra Modi Stadium was treated to another display of his incredible strokeplay. Gill changed the game completely in the favor of his team by destroying MI’s bowlers on the pitch.
He struck Akash Mahwal three times in the 11th over for six figures. Other bowlers were also unforgiving. Gill only needed 48 balls to get to 99 before he added another thrilling hundred.
One highest individual score in an IPL Playoff Inning
Gill’s 129 run record beats the previous record of 122 runs set by Virender sahwag against CSK in IPL 2014. Sehwag scored a century in the Qualifier 2 match of that season.
Two Most Runs in a Sequence of Six and Four Consecutive IPL Innings
In his six previous innings, he has totaled 129, 42*, 104*, 101*, 6, and 94*. In his six last IPL innings he scored 476 runs. It is the highest total ever in IPL history, surpassing Jos Buttler’s 456 runs in six consecutive innings, scored for the Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2022.
Gill has also scored 376 runs over his last four innings. It is the highest number of runs ever scored by a hitter during four consecutive IPL innings.
The Second-Highest Score by an Indian in IPL History
The Indian opener, who is known for his flashy style and flamboyant personality, also broke a record as the batter with the highest individual score in IPL’s history.
Gill’s 129-run score is only better than KL Rahul, who scored 132* runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore during IPL 2020.
Gill surpassed Rishabh Pan in the score. Pant was the best performer in 2018 with a 128* score against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
IPL Playoffs: Most Sixes in an Inning
Gill smashed 10 sixes at the MI bowlers during his innings. He ripped them apart with utter contempt. He has the most maximums ever hit by a batsman in an IPL playoff inning.
Saha, Virender Sehrwag, Chris Gayle and Shan Watson held the previous record of eight sixes.
Gill also has 10 maximums, which is the same as the number of maximums that any other hitter has against the Mumbai Indians. Rashid Khan hit 10 sixes at the Wankhede Stadium against MI earlier in IPL 202023.
5 Joint-Fastest 100 In An IPL Playoff Game
Gill, who was at 37 from 26 balls at one point, changed gears and only needed 49 balls in total to reach his third hundred of the year.
Gill’s 49-ball century currently shares the record for fastest IPL playoff game. Gill shares the record with Rajat Patidar, Wriddhiman Sha and Rajat Patidar, who all needed 49 balls for their centuries.
